Our holiday writing stars have impressed us – here are a few highlights to enjoy!

During the July holidays, our Advanced Writing Masterclasses for Years 3–6 saw students sharpen their skills, boost their writing speed, and let their creativity flow in a fun, small-group environment.

We’re thrilled to showcase a few of the brilliant and imaginative pieces from our talented students – Kylan, Mehmet and Jayden. Enjoy their funny and clever creations below!

The Writing Prompt: A new animal has been added to Swot Shop Zoo. Make a sign to give visitors new information about the animal.

BEARIHONEYOUS

Meet our furry friend – his scientific name is Bearihoneyous, but his real name is Bear.

He lives all over the world. He is a furry and sometimes ferocious animal but in his cave, he is warm and cuddly.

The scientific name of my animal is Bearihoneyous. It has a very large body, and it is larger than expected. Most Bearihoneyouses are a light brown colour. Some traits are that it has very short ears and it does not have a tail.

Some behaviours that make the animal stand out is how it takes its honey from a beehive, making it stretch fully to reach and collect the honey. A way you can recognise it is its light brown fur because some have dark brown fur. A fun fact is that he hibernates through cold winters because it is too cold to really survive.

The Writing Prompt: Write an exposition, arguing the following topic: Winter is the best season OR Summer is the best season

Summer Is the Best Season

Summer is without a doubt the BEST season as you can acquire Vitamin D, an endorphin releasing happiness, as well as having more outdoor time. These will ensure a solid reason for why summer is essentially the best season.

Firstly, summer is the best season as you can have fun outdoors. If you go outside, you won’t even be tempted to touch the television or your iPad. You will have just as much fun, if not more than playing on your iPad or watching television. So as you can see, this is a very good alternative for screen time.

To follow up, you can get stronger by gaining Vitamin D. This vitamin is a crucial part of life and you can become stronger by getting it. For example, if someone goes outside for around 2 hours every day in summer, then he will be stronger than anybody inside. Only in summer can you get this amazing vitamin properly. So, this is the best way to get stronger.

Lastly, as you know it is, having fun. You will experience an amazing time being outside and having fun. This releases a crucial endorphin which helps you be happy. This will increase happiness, and you will find yourself enjoying time in summer: whereas winter will only keep you inside with cold weather. To end, this is why you can reward yourself by having FUN!

To conclude, summer is without a doubt the best season as you can have fun, be outdoors and be stronger all in a way that you like. With summer, any sport is possible.

The Writing Prompt: Modern Parody of a Fairy Tale
Choose one of the well-known tales and write a modern parody based on the tale.

The Three Little Pigs

Once upon a time, there lived three little pigs and a mother and father pig.

“You all have grown up so much! I’m afraid you’ll have to leave to start your own families!” said the father pig.

The three little pigs moved out into a vast but flat plain, with lush green grass and towering trees surrounding them. However, these pigs didn’t want to work themselves, so they decided to use robots instead.

“I’m going to use the cheapest robot! It’s called ‘BuildGPT’ and only costs $5! It can finish any building in just 1 day!” boasted the youngest pig smugly.

“We all know that that machine is extremely low quality! I’m gonna use BuildPilot for $20! It can finish a building in 2 days, but is way better than yours! I bet yours is gonna blow down in 5 minutes!” declared the middle pig confidently.

“Both of your machines are inferior. Instead of completing the job quickly but poorly, you should choose a better option,” suggested the oldest pig.

Both of the younger pigs laughed and blew raspberries at the older pig. They were both confident that their machines were the best.

“I’m using DeepBuild. It costs $50 and takes 7 days, but is very high quality,” decided the oldest pig, certain that he had picked the right machine.

The construction began. It wasn’t long at all until the youngest pig’s house was done. A huge pile of dirt stood in the centre of the plain, with sticks and stones supporting it and a door which collapsed before the pig even got to open it. Yet, the first pig did not care and began playing with a ball.

Promptly after, the second pig’s house was done. A large block of wood now emerged in the middle of the plains, supported with decently well made logs and a door that actually worked…until the wind picked up and the door was blown off clean, and a few sticks fell, leaving a sizeable hole in the roof. However, the second pig took no notice and began playing volleyball with the first pig.

“Ha! I can’t believe your house isn’t done yet, you idiot! Why don’t you opt for BuildGPT?” teased the youngest pig.

The eldest pig took no notice, nonchalantly glancing at the other pigs playing volleyball as he worked tirelessly instructing the robots on how to build his house. Day and night, he was there, building intricate designs, sturdy supports and intriguing appearances. Furthermore, his house was far more spacious, and comfortable than the others. Finally, after an exhausting week, it was done. Serendipitously, his door did not blow off.

The pigs began to tease him on his choices, but he remained ignorant and instead basked in glory in his house, certain that his house was of the highest quality. The beautiful brick monument starkly juxtaposed the other houses.

One fateful day, a random looking robot walked up to their houses.
“I am Obliter-bot powered by DefinitelyNotAMaliciousWolf, the famous company. I can help renovate your houses,” it chirped, clearly trying to sound friendly but failing miserably.

The first pig was ecstatic, eagerly asking it to renovate his house, but the bot instead began knocking the walls. After 3 tiny taps, the house collapsed violently, and the pig fled to its first older brother’s house.

“I am Obliter-bot powered by DefinitelyNotAMaliciousWolf, the famous company. I can help renovate your houses,” it chirped again.

“I’ve seen your tricks! You can’t break my house when it was created by BuildPilot!” shouted the second pig.

The bot didn’t even flinch. It punched a wall. This time, the wall didn’t crumble instantly. So, the bot left.

The second pig began to taunt the third pig, saying that his walls were cheaper and strong enough. However, the bot suddenly returned, and this time was carrying a sledgehammer, and made quick work of the house. The two pigs immediately ran to the third pig’s house.

The bot, surprised by how easy it was to break the previous houses, tried banging on the walls with the sledgehammer, but failed. You could almost see its lights flickering angrily. So, it left and came back with a battering ram, and failed again.

“Let me in! I’ll renovate your house!” it said desperately.

“By your definition, renovate means to charge at it with a battering ram. Absolutely not.”

Before the pigs could celebrate, a wolf arrived, clearly the CEO of the ‘DefinitelyNotAMaliciousWolf’ company.

“I’LL HUFF, AND I’LL PUFF, AND I’LL BLOW YOUR HOUSE DOWN!!” he yelled furiously.

He took a deep breath, and began blowing. Nothing happened. The wolf began to rage.

“I know! I’ll blow this house up, instead of down!” he shouted, carrying what seemed to be an explosive in his hands.

He slammed it… and barely made a dent.

While all of this was happening, the second pig was recording this on the Three Little Pig’s YouTube channel.

After several more attempts, the wolf finally gave up on trying to break down the third pig’s house, and left sulking. He and his robot were forced to give up after trying to laser cannon the house, bomb it, bulldoze it, and drill through it.

The two younger pigs realised that they had learnt a valuable lesson that day. They learnt that doing something of high quality is more important than taking the fastest approach. And that making a door that doesn’t get demolished in a minute is important too. The video of the wolf and the robot raging went viral online, and is now famous, with the trends even making the ‘Pig’s Weekly’ news article! After that, they all made houses using DeepBuild, and all lived happily ever after.
