Advanced English and Maths Talent both run on twelve graded Mastery levels. They work much like grades in music, or coloured belts in judo: a clear rung to be on, a clear next rung, and a test that decides when your child moves up.

Tests are offered three times a year. Passing levels 3, 6, 9 and 12 promotes your child to the next program automatically. Students also earn a Swot Shop ribbon once they pass these particular levels.

Children are not expected to pass at every attempt, and a non-pass is not a setback. A parallel paper at the same level is offered in the next scheduled testing session. Sitting a level more than once is normal and expected.

Ribbons are awarded for passing a Mastery level, and for meritorious performance across assessments and competitions.

Collect five ribbons from a single program in one calendar year and your child earns that program’s Gold Award trophy – Galileo Gold, English Gold or Maths Gold. Bring the five ribbons to reception and we’ll arrange it.

Ribbons cannot be reissued, so they’re worth keeping somewhere safe.

In Advanced English and Maths Talent, promotion is automatic. Pass Mastery level 3, 6, 9 or 12 and your child moves up at the end of that term.

Behind both, we track progress and assessment results across the year. Teachers flag to the Education Team any student who appears to be finding the work too easy or too hard, and the Education Team reviews those students directly.

Most promotions take effect at the end of a term.

If you think your child is in the wrong level – in either direction – email [email protected] and ask for a review. We would rather look again than leave a child in a class that doesn’t fit.

We can’t arrange alternate assessment sittings. Your child is welcome to attend a makeup class. If, however, your child is away during an assessment week, they miss that assessment.

We can’t show you the internal testing papers. The same papers are used across testing sessions and with students sitting parallel levels, so they have to stay secure. You always receive the results.
