What gifted students actually need (and often don’t get at school)

Many high-potential students aren’t underperforming because they lack ability – they’re under-challenged, under-stimulated, or simply not being taught how to think deeply.

In many classrooms, teaching is designed to meet the middle. This means students who grasp concepts quickly often spend more time consolidating what they already know, rather than being extended into new and more complex thinking.

Over time, this can lead to a subtle but important shift.

Students who were once curious and engaged may begin to switch off. They may complete work quickly without care, avoid challenges, or lose confidence when faced with something that actually stretches them. Not because they aren’t capable, but because they haven’t had consistent opportunities to build that muscle.

High-potential students need something different.

They need to be challenged at the right level. They need to be exposed to unfamiliar problems. They need to be guided to think more deeply, justify their reasoning, and explore multiple approaches.

Most importantly, they need an environment where it’s normal not to know the answer immediately.
