AI in Education: Shortcut or Superpower?

AI is rapidly changing the education landscape and how students learn, but the real question isn’t whether they use it. It’s whether they’re thinking beyond it.

Tools like ChatGPT or Claude can undoubtedly be incredibly helpful. They can explain concepts, generate ideas, and even model strong responses in seconds. Used well, they can support learning and save tremendous amounts of time.

But there’s a growing risk we’re seeing more often: students using AI to replace thinking, rather than extend it.

When a student relies too heavily on AI to generate answers, they miss the most important part of the learning process – the struggle, the reasoning, and the ability to work through uncertainty. These are the skills that underpin strong performance, not just in exams, but in life beyond school.

High-performing students aren’t defined by how quickly they get to the answer. They are defined by how well they understand the why behind it.

AI can support efficiency, but it cannot replace independent thinking. In fact, when overused, it can weaken a student’s ability to form original ideas, structure arguments, and solve unfamiliar problems. These are precisely the skills assessed in OC and Selective exams, and the ones that matter most in higher-level learning.

In our classrooms, students are guided to break down problems, explore multiple pathways, and articulate their reasoning clearly. They are challenged to go beyond surface level answers and build depth in their understanding. This is what creates confident, capable learners who are adaptable.

AI isn’t something to avoid. It’s something to use wisely.

The goal isn’t to stop students from using these tools, but to ensure they remain in control of their thinking. When used correctly, AI can be a support. But it should never become a substitute.

Ultimately, the students who succeed won’t be the ones who found the fastest answers.
They’ll be the ones who learned how to think.
