Enrichment and Extension

Springboard Year 1

The Springboard Program engages bright young children in fun, challenging and stimulating activities to assist in the development of their reading, writing, number and thinking skills. Research has shown that the early development of thinking skills leads to more rapid progress later in the learning of reading, writing and maths.

Objectives of the Springboard Year 1 Program

Springboard at The Swot Shop is a foundational program for bright motivated young learners. The Kindergarten program focuses on enrichment and extension in the first year of school.

Children attend two-hour weekly sessions in small groups of equally minded motivated, bright learners. These consist of shorter engaging and tactile activities to enable younger learners to maintain concentration for the full period.

By offering a holistic approach to early learning enrichment, Springboard sets students up for success in school and beyond. Talent development whether it is sport, music, art or intellect is accomplished through a long, intensive nurturing process that begins in early childhood and involves special lessons, teachers and continuous training and practice over a considerable period. The Springboard Kindergarten Program aims to:

  • Boost and hone literary and language skills.
  • Improve and develop mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strengthen cognitive abilities in logic, strategy, memory and visual perception.
  • Cultivate a love for learning and investigation.
  • Aid in building self-assurance, self-worth and a positive outlook towards education.
  • Supplement and extend learning beyond educational programs in schools for high potential and gifted children.

Teaching techniques include instruction, discussion, discovery and co-operative problem-solving in a small group setting. Our experienced teachers make extensive use of hands-on materials, and many activities are presented as puzzles and games to make learning fun and engaging for younger learners.

The Year 1 Program:

  • Incorporates activities that will stimulate a child’s mind and lay a solid foundation for future learning.
  • Provides a caring, nurturing, environment where the child feels confident, secure and happy.
  • Offers a group learning situation as it gives the children opportunities to share their ideas and learn from their peers. It creates a positive learning environment.
  • Provides a learning environment which both challenges and inspires children to develop a passion for lifelong learning.
  • Is built on a belief that life and learning should be exciting not just repetition and learning rules.
  • Offers challenging and interesting activities that will assist language development, logical thinking, mathematical concepts and the development of thinking skills. Many aims can be achieved using hands-on equipment and games.
  • Complement school programs by providing different activities to school whilst building on the skills children are learning at school. Most importantly it aims to give children as many different experiences as possible.

Our belief is that children should not be accelerated through the school curriculum but provided with enrichment and extension activities.
