The Swot Shop’s Advanced English Program is so much more than a coaching or tutoring course. Designed specifically for bright motivated learners, Advanced English provides the perfect enrichment and extension learning experience for gifted and high potential students looking for opportunities to further develop their English skills, natural talent and interest.

Ideal as a foundational program for those aiming for Opportunity Class or Selective High School entry, Advanced English complements our dedicated OC and Selective Preparation Programs. When accompanied together, these courses will accelerate your child’s learning and confidence across all exam components. Students seeking a private school scholarship or entry into a competitive independent school will also be well served and prepared by these rigorous and challenging programs.

Early enrolment is recommended (starting in Year 2) to give students the best opportunity to build skills and talent development progressively through to Year 7, provided mastery benchmarks are met along the way.

Learning Outcomes

The Advanced English Program takes students well beyond the school curriculum and challenges them to seek and reach higher levels of comprehension, vocabulary mastery and oral and written communication skills.

Advanced English is offered at The Swot Shop across five programs starting in Year 2 right through to the highest level course in Year 7.

Across all program levels, students are taught in an engaging ability streamed group environment and led by experienced, expert teachers. The Swot Shop does not use “recipe and repetition” methods in any of our courses, but brings questioning, discussion and problem solving into the classroom to make learning productive, engaging and rewarding for students. This has the added benefit, especially for bright motivated children, of developing their higher level thinking skills alongside language and literacy skills.

The English Program Suite

📖 In Year 2 (Advanced English Primary C), the program concentrates on developing comprehension skills, vocabulary, grammar, oral and written communication skills. The program builds on the school curriculum and seeks to extend and strengthen the skills of these younger learners.

📖 In Year 3-6 (Advanced English Primary B, A and Advanced English Secondary C), the programs provide a focus on reading for understanding, oral discussion of passages and the appreciation of literature as well as the development of written communication skills within a variety of genres. Emphasis is placed on improving vocabulary and language, using correct grammatical construction and developing creativity. Mastery of the school curriculum is assumed to be complete so that teaching can enrich and strengthen student learning further.

📖 Advanced English Secondary B has a focus on both writing skills and comprehension. The writing component prepares students for the types of writing required in secondary school. It does this by extending vocabulary, improving writing style, developing essay writing techniques and by providing guided practice in learning to write creatively. The comprehension component develops advanced comprehension skills through the analysis of the works of impressive writers, poets and dramatists. This program offers a valuable and strong foundation for students as they prepare for high school level academic rigour and performance.

Progress Reporting and Testing

Each term, students attempt a mastery test or take part in a competition which helps to monitor their progress and ensure all students are challenged to their individual, optimal level. In line with the Swot Shop Mastery system, each class consists of 3 mastery bands and students advance to the next class once they have mastered levels 3, 6 and 9. Parents are provided with results from tests and given feedback on their children’s progress and performance in class. This can help parents to understand where students are excelling and where they may need to focus more.

Program Suitability

Swot Shop students in the Advanced English Program are likely to already display an interest in and enjoyment of language and literature. Students will most likely already be experiencing success in English and are keen to further develop and hone their skills and talents.

Entry Requirements

To be admitted to the English Advanced program, children sit an entry test. Students must have strong interest and skills in English to enjoy and benefit from the challenging nature of the course. They must achieve strong academic entry test results across reading, comprehension and writing to receive an offer.
