Blog post published 29 July 2026
This July, something special happened in our Writing Workshop.
Students across Years 3 to 6 arrived with ideas – and left with the skills, confidence, and voice to express them. Over five days of guided instruction, collaborative discussion, and structured writing tasks, our Intermediate and Advanced groups produced work that impressed us.
We are proud to share a selection of pieces from the July Writing Workshop below. Each writing piece was completed within a two-hour timeframe.

A visionary under pressure (e.g. Nikolas Tesla)

Dear Diary,
It is month eight of my journey out in the battlefield, yet such overwhelming missions I have encountered, especially today. But even if I am pressured and overwhelmed, I knew I had to fulfill my duty today. I never knew that fires can actually spread so much through plants. I saved 187 lives today, and I am extremely tired and weary from using my webs and super strength. Although it is something I should be proud of, I still deeply empathise for the aspiring shopkeepers who lost their stores in the violent fire at Westfield at Sydney City.
As soon as I got informed, I left my apartment prepared, hiding my weary feelings away. I chose to be courageous regardless of my feelings, and my dog Peppa helped me get through it. The fire was all over the first floor when I arrived, and it roared and bellowed, inducing fear – thank God that floor had been evacuated. Sprinting, I checked the second floor. Then I heard a cry from a helpless child sobbing in the distance. I shot my webs, leaping through the air as I swung from the roof and grasped the victims. I searched on level two, and no more elderly or children were there – none on level three and four either – those were evacuated. But level five was bustling with suffering people…and the security men were helpless too.
I stood there for a moment – I shouldn’t have when I think about it now, but my eyes flooded with tears. Oh, the pity I felt for those hopeful shopkeepers, hoping for a new rising family business. The clothing shops, where their hard work had been burnt to dust, and the bookstores too. I squinted in the smoke. I wiped my eyes and let my webs stream out, wrapping the people in small groups and evacuating them outside on the high windows, fearing that I would not be able to take them all. The fire was beneath us at this point, on level four. Finally – I had saved them, saved them all, but the pity stayed inside me, overwhelming my soul. I smiled faintly as I released the fire hydrant. I hope I don’t let my emotions slow me down again.
Signing off,

The importance of playing outdoors

Good morning everyone,
Today I am going to talk about why playing outdoors can help us with many things that are important in life. I am going to give you three reasons why we should play outside more often. These reasons will persuade you to listen and do fitness activities.
Firstly, it helps you exercise your body. This helps with your mental health so you can be fit. You can also get fresh air. This helps with physical activities, so you don’t get tired and need a break for half of the time and don’t get lazy. That’s why exercise is vital for our body.
Secondly, it makes your brain sharper for learning. That helps with studies and being more focused. It makes you ready for anything that comes your way. This helps with other things like sports, PE and athletic carnivals. Sharper minds help with everyday life, so you don’t fall behind in studies and sport. This is another good reason why we should play outside.
Lastly, you learn about the environment more. You can find ways to help and protect our beautiful land. It also helps with your science and geography so you can be ready for these classes. Learning about nature is a good thing. You can understand the world around you by just looking and listening. If nature needs help, you may know just the way to help it. This is a vital reason for why you should play outdoors more often.
Fitness activities and playing outdoors are more important than you think. When your parents take you out, be sure to run around so you can include more fitness activities. These are my reasons why playing outdoors helps a lot. Thank you.

We should get rid of plastic toys

Imagine this: you buy a plastic toy and when you research it, you find out that there are many side effects – for example, it can be a choking hazard, there are environmental effects and many times, plastic is only a one-time use. This does not help anyone and should be abolished.
These plastic toys can cause choking hazards, since babies can suck on them continuously, which isn’t good, as the tiny particles can enter your immune system and make you sick. This could lead to you going to hospital, which nobody wants. To avoid this, we can make toys that aren’t made from plastic, like foam – it is soft and doesn’t cause much damage when dropped.
This well known material does not just affect us but also affects sea life, as it is not the right food for them to eat and disturbs their bodies. This happens when these things are thrown into landfill, and once it is filled to the max, it escapes and ends up in the sea. This is also not good for us, because if fish eat it and we catch that fish, the plastic will end up in our stomachs.
Plastic is only one-time use; it is a waste of money. These things are single use because they are not durable – they don’t do anything but end up straight in the landfill. They are not a suitable toy because they can easily get scratched and dented, which nobody likes, so people throw them in the bin. Even so, plastic is really easy to wear down and become brittle. It is terrible and should disappear soon.
Plastic turns out to be a waste and should not be accepted in our human society. They lead to choking, have bad environmental effects, and are one-time use.

Write a speech on the following topic:
What makes a great friend?

Do you have a friend? An arrogant one, or even an empathetic one.
Greetings respected teachers and students. The reason I am up here today is to inform you what a true good friend is. A friend is someone who can support you, someone who is authentic and allows you to be yourself. They are honest and respectful. A great friend shapes your personality in ways you can’t imagine; a good friend can guide you to success and joy. Today I am going to explain what a good friend is and how to treat one.
Imagine this: in school, you have a big test happening. You are scared and frightened to even try it because of your self-doubt. Then, you explain your situation to your friend, but your friend does not even care. This is not how a friend should be. A great friend would wait for you to finish, soak up all the doubt in your sentences, and then reassure you with positive words. Researchers say that receiving positive and helpful words can increase self-esteem and boost morale. This can help you believe in yourself, with proof from someone else that thinks you are great.
A great friend is someone who lets you be yourself, not someone who forces you to be something that only satisfies them. A wise and kind friend is also humble. They are definitely not arrogant – an arrogant and jealous friend will try to rub something good that they achieved in your face, making you feel bad. A humble friend is better than an arrogant one because they are supportive.
I have a marvellous friend. He never lies and respects me a lot. I do the same back. This is what a respectful friend is, a person who never lies and tells the truth even if they know it will make you mad. But here’s the thing – that is actually a good thing. Telling the truth when you know the friend will be mad. It shows courage and trust: they know you won’t hurt them mentally or physically.
Finally, a great friend is a humble and supportive person. They are authentic and respectful.
