How You Can Talk to Your Child About Their Results

Results days can be charged moments – for parents and children alike. Whether your child performed brilliantly, fell short of expectations, or landed somewhere in between, the conversation that follows matters more than most parents realise.

Here are some ideas to try.

Lead with curiosity, not judgment
Before sharing your reaction, ask your child how they feel about their results. You might be surprised. Some children who perform well feel anxious about maintaining it. Some who struggled feel relieved it is over. Starting with their perspective rather than your own sets a very different tone for the conversation.

Keep perspective
At The Swot Shop, all our students have been admitted following a rigorous entry process. They are competing within a cohort of academic high achievers. A result that sits below average here would likely sit well above average in a broader context. It is worth reminding your child – and yourself – of that.

Separate effort from outcome
Results are a snapshot, not a verdict. What a result tells you is where a child is right now – not where they are capable of going. Acknowledging the effort your child put in, regardless of the outcome, reinforces the behaviours that lead to long-term educational growth.

Avoid comparisons
It can be tempting to reference siblings, classmates, or even your own academic history. Resist it. Comparisons – even well-intentioned ones – tend to produce shame or resentment rather than motivation.

Be honest, but be kind
Children are perceptive. They know when a result is not what was hoped for, and pretending otherwise can feel dismissive. It is okay to acknowledge that a result was disappointing – what matters is framing what comes next as something that will be worked through together.

End with a forward focus
The best conversations about results end not with a verdict but with a plan. What is one thing we can work on? What did you find interesting, even if it was hard? What would you like to do differently next time? Forward-looking questions turn a results conversation into a growth conversation.
