The Swot Shop’s mastery system has formed the foundation of our success and leadership in gifted education programs for over 30 years. Three times a year, our students in Years 2-7 English and Maths sit a mastery assessment to determine their progress and readiness for promotion to the next level.

We are often asked, especially by new parents, how this system works and what is so special about it. In this article, we address some of the most frequently asked questions.

How does the Swot Shop mastery system work?

Reflecting the structured progression found in music, ballet or martial arts, The Swot Shop programs in our Maths Talent and Advanced English programs incorporate series of twelve mastery levels. These levels are benchmarks and milestones of achievement and provide students with tangible progression goals along their educational journey with us.

The program and mastery levels are shown here:

Why a mastery approach?

The Swot Shop programs were developed for gifted and high potential students looking to develop their academic talents in a group environment with students of similar ability and aptitude. This is still the focus of our programs today and why students undergo entry testing to be admitted to The Swot Shop.

The Swot Shop mastery approach is an important part of our program series to meet this goal of extending and enriching the education of high potential students. It links our programs together in a unique system of assessment and progression allowing academically gifted students to always be challenged and learn at exactly the right level throughout their time with us. It also ensures that parents and students receive frequent, precise and detailed feedback on their child’s progress from these assessments.

How does entry testing fit in?

When students first participate in entry testing at The Swot Shop, we use the results to allocate students a mastery level and program that suits their ability and skills level at the time. Students are placed in classes with peers of the same ability level rather than based on their age or school year.

As students progress through our programs, they are assessed against mastery benchmarks several times a year and advance through our program and mastery levels.

How are student promotions determined?

Promotions in both English and Maths are seamlessly integrated into our mastery framework following the attainment of certain mastery levels, typically at the end of each term. This structure ensures a consistent and motivating pathway for students to excel and progress through their learning journey with The Swot Shop.

Progression from one program to the next ensures that our students are offered the opportunity to enrich and extend their learning beyond the school curriculum at their grade level.

Students in Maths Talent and Advanced English programs will next sit their mastery assessments in Term 3.

Want to learn more?

During Term 3, parents of enrolled students will have the opportunity to attend parent meetings with our Education team to learn more about our programs, the mastery approach and how it enriches children’s learning in our classrooms.

At our entry test sessions for new students, we also hold information sessions for prospective parents which offer an opportunity to meet our team.
