As both a former selective school student and a teacher in selective schools, I have seen how these environments can shape learners well beyond the headline ATARs. Selective school education is fundamentally about identifying high potential, surrounding students with peers who value learning and guiding them to leave school confident, capable and future-ready. If you are weighing up whether the selective school pathway is the right fit for your child, here are the key insights I have gathered from both sides of the classroom.
Selective schools and HSC performance
Selective schools consistently excel in the Higher School Certificate. In 2024, seven of the top ten NSW schools were selective.* Ranked lists, however, only hint at the underlying culture that drives those outcomes:
- Experienced teachers – Many teachers in selective schools are HSC markers or senior markers. They understand the examinations inside out, teach with those expectations in mind and remain current through regular professional learning in gifted and high-potential education. Their expertise translates directly into stronger student performance.
- Motivated peer group – A school assembly in my teaching career captured the ethos perfectly. Two students had just returned from representing Australia at the International Mathematical Olympiad and the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad. As they stepped onto the stage, the entire hall rose in an immediate standing ovation, an authentic celebration of intellectual achievement that can flourish only in a community where academic effort is openly valued and shared success is the norm.
- Rich enrichment programs – Beyond the classroom, students may join subject societies, Olympiad teams, student-led clubs, research projects and lunchtime workshops. These avenues encourage collaboration with like-minded peers, the pursuit of passions in depth and the development of leadership and service skills. Co-curricular sport receives the same support. For example, I have accompanied three school volleyball teams to compete at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the Gold Coast, an experience that blended athletic excellence with teamwork and school pride.

Long-term benefits beyond the ATAR
Strong HSC results are only the opening chapter. The deeper value of a selective school education often reveals itself years after graduation.
How selective schools unlock long-term benefits
Educational psychologist Professor Françoys Gagné notes that high potential, whether intellectual, creative, social-emotional or physical, becomes high performance only when students receive targeted challenge and support. Selective schools provide precisely that through:
- Ability grouping – Learners work alongside peers of similar aptitude and ambition, creating healthy competition and rich collaboration.
- Acceleration, enrichment and extension – Curricula move at an appropriate pace, explore concepts in depth and present open-ended tasks that demand analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
- Specialised pedagogy – Teachers employ evidence-based strategies for gifted and high-potential cohorts, balancing intellectual stretch with well-being support.
Academic and social dividends
Graduates routinely highlight four lasting advantages:
- University readiness – disciplined time management, independent study habits and academic resilience.
- Expanded opportunities – scholarships, early-entry pathways, Olympiads and industry internships.
- Supportive peer culture – strong friendships formed around shared curiosity and aspirations.
- Quiet confidence – daily exposure to high expectations equips students to tackle complex challenges beyond school.
Selective schooling therefore cultivates self-motivated learners who carry robust study habits, a growth mindset and valuable networks into university and the workplace.
