Opportunity Classes (OC) are offered by the NSW Department of Education for high potential and gifted students in Years 5 and 6. These programs are exclusively available at a select number of schools.

OC places are highly sought after, particularly by families whose children may later compete for entry into Selective High Schools. With fewer than 2,000 places available each year and more than 15,000 applicants, entry is extremely competitive.

When and How to Apply

  • Parents apply at the end of Year 3 or beginning of Year 4 for placement in Year 5.
  • The OC program is a two-year program (Years 5–6) – it is not possible to apply for Year 6 only.
  • Parents can choose up to four schools in their application.
  • Students must be aged 9 years 5 months to 11 years at the start of Year 5, though younger or older students can request consideration.
  • In 2026, the OC exam will be held in early May.

There are currently 57 OC schools in Sydney and 88 across NSW. As with Selective schools, 20% of places are reserved for under-represented students under the Equity Placement Model.

Why Parents Choose Opportunity Classes

Families often see OC placement as a valuable opportunity because it provides:

  • Challenging curriculum – designed to extend and stimulate gifted learners beyond the standard syllabus.
  • Peer group of similar ability – children thrive when learning alongside others who share their pace and curiosity.
  • Strong preparation for Selective High Schools – many families view OC as a pathway to successful Year 7 selective entry.
  • Supportive environment – with specialist teachers who understand the learning and emotional needs of gifted children.
