In the Galileo program which Michelle (and now her daughter) so enjoyed, bright students enjoy tactile learning experiences incorporating Maths, Science and English in a fun and engaging environment that stimulates their higher level of thinking and problem-solving skills.

Each year, Galileo students showcase their talents in a writing competition, engaging in friendly competition with their Swot Shop peers in the same school year.

Here we publish another one of the fantastic winners from 2024. This impressive writing is by Shukan Trivedi in Year 4 to the topic:

What if you could not talk or whisper for an entire week? Describe the ways in which you would communicate with others.

“If I could not talk or whisper for a week, I would do a number of things to communicate with others.

Firstly, I would write signs. I would take a piece of cardboard, probably from my sister’s massive loot, and scribble down the things I want to say. People can read it, and they’d understand me and give me what I want. There is one flaw in this: I’ll run out of cardboard. Even though my sister has a huge loot, I’ll probably need to say more things than that.

Second of all, I would try to learn sign language. I already know the basics of sign language because my friend is deaf. I’ll teach my family the language, and then we can communicate! But the problem is that I don’t know how to teach my family sign language if I am mute.

Additionally, I would do many facial expressions and hand gestures. This is probably the best option because it allows me to do things that the other two probabilities can’t. Everyone in my family could understand me! However, it is quite hard to hand-gesture some things like trying to show my feelings when I am angry, scared, happy, anxious, envious or nostalgic.

If I am mute for a week, then I would use one of the techniques above. Although all of them have flaws, what choice do I have? If I am stuck in this kind of scenario in reality, I am very and truly doomed. It is MUCH easier when someone tells me to be quiet when I am my own chatty self!”
